Lea MacLeod has been playing for Antigonish’s St. F.X. women’s hockey team since 2019. She is competing in the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games, beginning today. For MacLeod, the opportunity to be part of Team Canada’s 22-person roster is the chance of a lifetime. Sidelined due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FISU event is returning for the first time since that tournament, when Team Canada fell to Russia in the gold medal final. If MacLeod seems self-assured about her hockey talent, she has good reason. After all, born in Germany while her father, Jeff MacLeod, was enjoying a successful seven-year career in the German Elite League, she admits “when I popped out, I was pretty much on skates.”“My dad, he was always taking us on the ice when he had time with his busy hockey schedule,” adds MacLeod. “My brother, he also pro in Germany right now so we grew up playing hockey together.
