Squamish-based artist Sarah Symes works primarily with textiles — hand-woven cotton, linen, silk and the like. But late last year, the B.C. designer was given the opportunity to work with a one-of-a-kind piece of fabric: the cloak worn by the bastard Jon Snow, Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, on HBO’s hit drama Game of Thrones.
Symes was one of 18 artists hand-picked by the Game of Thrones team to create original pieces inspired by 18 different props from the show, as part of the “Create For the Throne” campaign in advance of the eighth and final season’s premiere later this month. A mixed-media artist from Kansas was sent the Night Watch’s dragon glass daggers. A Brooklyn-based neon design firm was given Lord Beric Dondarrion’s flaming sword.
Symes, who is best known to Squamish residents as the artist behind the colourful street banners displayed throughout the district, was given just one month to create her original piece. This meant she had to get comfortable with the mud-stained wool, faux fur and leather cloak in a hurry, even if it fell a little outside her comfort zone.
“My first response was to simply reimagine the cloak on a canvas, but I pushed myself to make a piece of art that embodied the cloak and the stories of the men who wore it. I intuitively pieced together the composition and fractured it with strips and angular shapes to depict the landscape and stories of the Night’s Watch,” she said.
The result was a 60″ tall x 36″ wide, abstract piece that incorporates strips of the cloak, as well as its leather belt, alongside a patchwork of hand-dyed blue, pink and white fabric that represent aspects of the expansive Game of Thrones universe. Upon completion, the piece was shipped to New York, where it will go on display beginning Monday, and appear on the official Game Of Thrones Instagram account to promote the season premiere on April 14.
