A reflection on Spyro's legacy 25 years in.
Since its very first entry, the Spyro series has cemented itself in the gaming world as one of the hallmark examples of what a platformer should be. Originally created by Insomnia Games, the first three games in the franchise were given new life through developer Toys for Bob, which released The Spyro Reignited Trilogy. This month, Spyro is celebrating its 25th anniversary, with a myriad of celebrations planned both by Toys for Bob and fans themselves.
What are some of the most impressive things that you've seen from fans over the years, whether it's art or discovering secrets about the series or something else entirely? What things from the community have stood out to you over the years? I've seen some incredible mods for Reignited. I think the one that's maybe my favorite, the one that comes to mind immediately, is chonky Spyro. [Laughs] I don't know if you've seen that one. I don't know if that's the actual name. But he's a really rotund version of Spyro, it's super endearing. That's one of my favorites. Just a couple of days ago, I saw someone recreated Tree Tops in a Sonic level, and that was incredible to see.
Paul Yan: I got into game development because at the end of the day it's a craft that I enjoy doing, and my goal is to make sure that people experience joy out of this craft. So seeing a number as large as 10 million - the number is not important in and of itself, it's an indication that there are a lot of people who are enjoying this game that I had a hand in. And that's an incredible validation.
Stewart Copeland: Well, I didn't have much time to think about creative process, I just had to churn and burn. There was so much music required; it was like doing a quadruple album of backing tracks every summer for four years. It was deeply engrossing, but I had to just move so quickly that I discovered something interesting about composition and probably other artistic endeavors as well, which is that that pressure increases the quality.
And I know a handful of years ago, there were some talks about doing a sort of Spyro soundtrack tour. Have you thought about revisiting that idea at all?
