The 19-year-old Sochan, drafted ninth out of Baylor, is averaging 10.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 rebounds in 44 appearances. He is the first Spurs rookie since Tim Duncan in 1997-98 to average at least 10 points. His 41 starts are the most for a first-year Spur since Tony Parker started 72 games in 2001-02.
Sochan is one of only two members of this year’s rookie class to total at least 400 points, 200 rebounds and 100 assists. The other is Orlando’s Paolo Banchero, the No. 1 pick in the June draft. The Rising Stars challenge is scheduled for Feb. 17 at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City. The player pool consists of 11 NBA rookies and 10 second-year players, selected by a vote of NBA assistant coaches, and seven G League players, selected by the league office.
