Two Huskies — one each from the women’s and men’s soccer teams — showed impeccable timing to help each of their teams earn draws on the weekend. Trailing 1-0 in injury time of the Huskie women’s game at home on Sunday against the Fraser Valley Cascades, Nicole Burnett scored the first goal of her university career to earn the 1-1 draw.

In pre-season men’s hockey action the host Huskies defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 3-2 on Friday but lost 2-0 to the same Golden Bears on Saturday. In women’s action the Huskies travelled to Winnipeg and outscored the Manitoba Bisons 5-3 on Saturday.The Saskatoon Blades took the first game of a home-and-home series against the Prince Albert Raiders with a 4-3 overtime win in Prince Albert on Friday night.

Lukas Hanson got the game winning goal for the Blades on Friday 1:15 into overtime. Trevor Wong, Vaughn Watterodt and Spencer Shugrue also scored for the Blades. Raiders scorers were Justice Christensen, with two, and Trevor Thurston. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Blades scored three straight goals in the second to take a 3-1 lead into the third.Article content

On Saturday, Niall Crocker’s power play goal late in the third gave the Raiders the 2-1 win. Evan Herman opened the scoring for the Raiders just 44 seconds into the game. Tanner Molendyk replied for the Blades. The Blades will finish the pre-season 3-2-0-0 with the Raiders at 3-1-1-0. The teams start the regular season with another home-and-home set on Friday in Prince Albert and Saturday in the Blades home opener at 7 p.m. at SaskTel Centre.
