The actor’s turn as Mysterio in SpiderManFarFromHome is Peak Gyllenhaal in all the right ways
, it was also clear to viewers going into the movie that Beck—nicknamed Mysterio by Parker’s classmates after they mistranslate an Italian news item—would end up being the film’s main villain. Was the Spider-verse going to cast him as a brooding, noble soul gradually corrupted? The concept could be interesting—but it’s also a little been there, done that, especially for the superhero canon.
And then the film takes a turn. After he’s tricked into handing over Tony Stark’s glasses, embedded with a hyperpowered virtual assistant and drone deployer named EDITH, Peter Parker exits—and Beck’s countenance completely changes. He becomes wildly enthusiastic, a chipper showman thrilled to pull the wool over a teenage superhero’s eyes.
It’s endlessly fun to watch Gyllenhaal tackle this trope of actors playing actors . The part lets him play around with duality: when he’s hanging with Spider-Man and Nick Fury , he’s the disaffected hero. Around his team, he’s a bratty maniac, willing to kill anyone who thwarts his success or fails to steam his ceremonial cape just so.
This film is also just the latest example of Gyllenhaal playing bonkers characters, a string that some might say began in earnest with 2014’s—which saw Gyllenhaal drop weight to play a bloodthirsty, bug-eyed journalist. He was similarly kooky in 2017’sas Dr. Johnny Wilcox, an environmental scientist with a creepy perma-grin, short-shorts, and a cracking, high-pitched voice, easily making him the weirdest part of an experimental movie about a little girl who’s best friends with a super pig.
