Luis de la Fuente, coach of the Spain men's national football team, testified in the trial of former Spanish soccer federation president Luis Rubiales, denying any involvement in discussions regarding Jenni Hermoso after the controversial World Cup kiss incident. The trial continues with prosecutors seeking a prison sentence for Rubiales and other former federation officials.
Spain men's coach Luis de la Fuente maintained on Tuesday during the Luis Rubiales trial in Madrid that he did not participate in any discussions concerning Jenni Hermoso following the controversial kiss from the former Spanish soccer federation president. Rubiales, the former Spanish soccer president, is facing charges of sexual assault for kissing Hermoso, a Spanish forward, without her consent during the team's victory celebration at the 2023 Women's World Cup .
De la Fuente stated that his only interaction with Hermoso in recent months was at a gala event approximately two months ago. Although he attended the Women's World Cup final in Australia, he asserted that he had no conversations with Spanish federation officials regarding the kiss or any attempts to support Rubiales. The 47-year-old Rubiales, alongside three other former federation officials - former Spain women's coach Jorge Vilda, former sports director of the Spain men's team Albert Luque, and former head of marketing Ruben Rivera - are accused of pressuring Hermoso to publicly defend Rubiales after the incident. Hermoso vehemently refused to comply. De la Fuente confirmed that during his visit to the federation following the scandal, his discussions revolved solely around football matters and business related to his position as the men's national coach. During the trial, the judge expressed frustration with the testimony of former federation press chief Pablo Garcia Cuervo, demanding clearer answers. Cuervo admitted to drafting some of Hermoso's comments to a local radio station for media release. He explained that Hermoso inquired about the possibility of creating a video with the comments, but he deemed it unnecessary.Hermoso, who took the stand on the first day of the trial on Monday, declared that she felt disrespected by Rubiales after winning the Women's World Cup final, and that the kiss had tarnished one of the happiest days of her life. Rubiales, who has yet to testify, denies all charges. He resigned under pressure three weeks after the incident and was subsequently banned by FIFA for three years. Rubiales had previously characterized the situation as a 'witch hunt' orchestrated by 'false feminists.' Prosecutors, Hermoso, and the Spain players' association are seeking a prison sentence of two and a half years for Rubiales, a fine of 50,000 euros ($51,800 US) for damages, and a lifetime ban from officiating in sports. They are requesting a sentence of one and a half years in prison for the other three defendants. The trial is expected to continue for at least 10 days, with Rubiales in attendance on the first day
