SpaceX gets federal approval for South Texas launch of Starship, the world's most powerful rocket
Monday from South Texas after receiving clearance from federal regulators.
Billionaire Elon Musk previously announced that his company would be ready to launch in the third week of April. Then SpaceX listed Monday as the target flight date on its website. But both announcements had a giant asterisk — the company needed federal approval before igniting the rocket's 33 engines for liftoff.
The Federal Aviation Administration gave that approval Friday after more than 500 days reviewing the launch application. This process was lengthy because the SpaceX program is"dynamic," according to an FAA official who emphasized the organization's focus on public safety, and multiple changes were made to the company's application as SpaceX tinkered with its design.
