A new report is highlighting a need for a dedicated community hub supporting Black communities in Durham Region.
“All of this is warehoused in one space,” she said. “So you’re not looking to find or try to identify where you can find these resources; they’re in one space.” “The report […] is really looking to highlight those needs for the Durham Region,” she said. “Durham Region has really come alongside the Durham Community Collective to support the efforts that we’re looking to achieve in the community.”
“A recurring concern shared by participants was the difficulty in finding community programs and services in Durham that feel safe, comfortable and culturally-relevant,” reads the report. “Many participants stated that available programs in the Region are not reflective of the Black community, and that when they are able to find culturally-reflective programs, there is limited accessibility, either due to geographical location or to cost.
“Youth are really looking for programming that is going to tie directly to their heritage and their ancestry,” said McIntosh. “We know that when our youth are grounded in their heritage and culture, they thrive.”
