CHATHAM – A former Leamington man who murdered his two children is on his second stint of day parole, and has the money to enjoy the finer things in life after coming into an inheritance.
Dewald received a life sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in a Chatham courtroom in March 1999 for killing his two children, Christopher, 12, and Jennifer, 10, by drowning them on Aug. 13, 1998. The day-parole decision from September 2018 outlined how Dewald, during his hearing, described his long-standing depression, an obsession with having a relationship with a particular woman, and anger stemming from the belief his children stood in the way of that relationship.
“However, in the board’s view you continued to deflect some blame by pointing out other life challenges. Further, you minimized the planning associated with your actions as well as your behaviour following the murders when you tried to cover up your actions and feign innocence. The decision also noted Dewald told the board he thinks of his children every day but couldn’t recall their birth dates, including the years of their birth.
With a low risk to reoffend and external support from family, friends and other community members and organizations to help his reintegration, Dewald was granted his first six-month day parole.
