United Methodist Church and Community Development for All People on Columbus' South Side is operating a warming center 7p.m.-7 a.m. through February.
Lion Barber, 47, sat next to the entrance at a warming center on Columbus’ South Side to greet people seeking shelter from the cold."People die outside in the cold. It is brutal," said Barber, who was wearing several coats and sweatshirts and two gloves that did not match Saturday night."The cold gets to your bones.”
“We are seeing a lot of young people in this season and more families too, and it’s just heartbreaking to see people go through such a hard time” Hairston said. “They are so grateful that they have somewhere warm to stay.” “A few days of rest where they don’t have to be stressed out about the cold can make a big difference,” Hairston said. “We’ve had success stories where someone was homeless forever, and he came here, rested, ate, got shaven and clean. And last night he told me he just got a job. They just need a break.”
“We didn’t want to go to the shelters because we didn’t want to be separated. We would’ve had nowhere to go if not for this church.”
