The South Elgin Village Board decided to cancel this year’s Fourth of July parade in favor of a concert and picnic in Panton Mill Park.
“Don’t think of this as the end for having the parade,” Village President Steve Ward said Tuesday. “We’ll push harder and earlier next year. This is just a hiatus.”Ward said it came as a surprise to him that so few groups had signed up for the parade, which typically draws more participation. Prior parades have had 60 to 80 units participating, village spokesman Craig Pierce said.
Ward and his son were planning to be in the parade but aside from the South Elgin High School Marching Band, most of the units involved would have been small ones and the parade would have lasted about 10 minutes, Ward said. The efforts put into a “mini-parade” — attendees gathering for such a short time, traffic being rerouted off Spring Street, police and emergency management needing to be in place — all weighed into the decision, Pierce said.
“They had already committed to the parade, and we’re grateful for their willingness to participate, adapt and provide a classic, patriotic celebration,” Pierce said. “It would be something akin to a reverse parade, where folks can walk past the participants, learn about their business or organization or simply admire their organization’s Fourth of July display,” Pierce said.
