Completion of controversial project will now be delayed until summer
Originally planned for January, completion date for Sault Ste. Marie's downtown plaza has been advanced six months to July.
"Supply chain issues have been experienced, causing a delay in the project," Tom Vair, the city's deputy chief administrative officer for community development and enterprise services, tells SooToday. "In our case, receiving the equipment and supplies for the outdoor ice pad has caused a delay in the ability to pour the concrete until spring once the frost is out of the ground," Vair says."We continue to work with our consultants and general contractor to mitigate impacts where possible and an update report will be coming to council in the future."
The controversial plaza, between the Bay Street Tim Horton's and Queen Street, is being built by Avery Construction Ltd. for $8.6 million – $1.3 million more than what city council originally budgeted for the project. Across Brock Street, Ruscio Construction is working on moving Mill Market into the former intercity bus terminal/ taxi stand at 73 Brock St. – under a city contract valued at $3 million.
