The officiating wasn’t great, but the 49ers came up short because of their own bad luck and self-inflicted wounds.
You can see the grievances percolating on social media although the 49ers, to their credit, stayed away from blaming an error-prone third party for determining the outcome of their loss 31-7 to the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday in the NFC Championship Game.
With quarterback Brock Purdy going down with an elbow injury, only to return in a compromised way once backup Josh Johnson was lost to a concussion, all that was left was the scuffling at the end. Coach Kyle Shanahan said he thought about throwing his challenge flag even though he hadn’t seen a replay showing the ball against the turf. That instinct was correct, but he didn’t act on it. Big mistake, because a replay surfaced after the Eagles quickly got to the line and ran a play.Instead of turning the ball over on downs, the Eagles had an opening-drive touchdown that ended in a 6-yard run by Miles Sanders.
On the second, T.Y. McGill was called for illegal hands to the face when the call could have just as easily been holding on the Eagles. Instead of a 2-yard loss for third-and-12, it was a Philadelphia first down.
