Deer Park upped its winning streak to four with another big road win as team bounces Mavs on its home floor.
Deer Park's Isaiah Aguirre works on keeping the ball away from Memorial's defense Saturday afternoon. Aguirre exploded for all of his points in the second half, 15, in helping the team remain tied for first place. He wears a jersey with the number 30 on it, but he's a big reason Deer Park was celebrating its seventh district triumph that arrived on an unfamiliar floor.
The victory raised Deer Park's winning streak to four as head coach Ryan Bright's crew reduced its magic number to clinching a Class 6A state playoff berth to one. Now with only 33 percent of the 22-6A campaign left, the Deer remained tied for first place with South Houston. The Trojans did their part to stay deadlocked with Deer Park by defeating Sam Rayburn 75-39 Saturday.
That's when Aguirre earned a First Team All-District vote. He scored the team's next 12 points, starting it with a 3-point bucket, following it with a regular goal on the team's next possession and then taking advantage of a Memorial traveling call to drain his second 3-point goal. Not done with his third-period rampage, he had just enough time to score again. He ended his run with a lay-up to start the fourth period, handing Deer Park its largest advantage of the game.
Buffalo nearly had a double-double, finishing with 16 points and eight boards. Deer Park won the rebounding battles by a 25-17 margin. Malachi Martinez-Miller and Josh Anderson combined for nine additional boards.
