The appointment was announced by Minister of Justice Arif Virani and follows the resignation of Justice T.A. MacPherson on July 13. A bilingual jurist who earned her civil law degree at the Université de Montréal in 1998 and her common law degree at the Université de Moncton in 1999, MacDonald was called to the P.E.I. Bar in 2000 and to the Ontario Bar in 2003, earning the title of King's Counsel in 2020.

Her legal career encompasses time spent with Cox Hanson O'Reilly Matheson where she articled and practiced. In 2016, she joined Stewart McKelvey and became a partner in 2020, specializing in family law within her litigation practice. Throughout her career, MacDonald actively contributed to her legal community through various volunteer roles, including serving as president of the P.E.I. Branch Canadian Bar Association and as a member of the P.E.I. Access to Justice Committee.
