Sony has just announced a new studio dedicated to creating movies and television shows based on more than 100 video game properties.
Sony Interactive has just announced PlayStation Productions, a new studio that will work on adapting the company’s massive catalogue to film and television. The new studio will have access to more than 100 video game properties including Uncharted, God of War and Ratchet and Clank. Asad Qizilbash, who has worked in multiple marketing roles at Sony over the past 11 years will head the studio, overseen by Shawn Layden, Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman of Worldwide Studios.
"Instead of licensing our IP out to studios, we felt the better approach was for us to develop and produce for ourselves," Qizilbash told The Hollywood Reporter."One, because we’re more familiar, but also because we know what the PlayStation community loves." Unlike other video game movies, like World of Warcraft or Assasin’s Creed, PlayStation productions will handle creating the movie instead of handing off the job to a production company. Sony looked at what Marvel Studios had done in creating an entire cinematic universe on its own, and wanted to try a similar approach.“We don’t have to rush to market. We don’t have a list of ‘X number of titles must be done in this year.’ None of that," Layden also told The Hollywood Reporter .
Sony’s catalogue of games stretches from the mainstream to the utterly obscure. God of War, with an angry Kratos evolving into a loving dad, could make for an amazing miniseries. Picture Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with both blades chained to his wrists as he downs mythological monsters while juggling an angsty preteen.
With PlayStation’s [production schedule, it can also take the time to properly adapt a lesser-known IP. Picture the style of Into the Spiderverse with a Parappa the Rapper origin story. That would allow the movie to stay true to its low-poly roots while still allowing for beautiful and creative imagery. The same can be said for Ape Escape, a franchise that’s been completely forgotten by Sony in recent years.
