This year marked the first time since before the COVID pandemic hit that the Mariners could match up with special needs youth and young adults.

“A lot of the kids that started out are now young adults. Just to see them, you know how happy they are.” Like the prompting that fans receive at the Mariners Centre during the home hockey games – “Let’s make some noise for your Junior A Mariners!” – there’s lots of noise here too in the form of laughter, talking and cheering during the Icy Knights sessions, which started out in the early years of the hockey club's franchise.

TINA COMEAUAsked what he sees as a big takeaway of the program, Reilly Mayne says it’s not only the youth that benefit from the weekly sessions, but the players too.
He sees and experiences this both from a coaching perspective and also as a parent. His daughter Natalie is one of the Icy Knights participants.The Yarmouth Mariners Icy Knights program.
