'I know it’s hard to stop them swimming but somebody will die'

A worried business owner warned that “somebody will die” after hundreds of sun-worshippers were reported to be defying warnings by open water swimming during this week’s unprecedented hot weather.

Rossendale Police said they also handed out more than 25 fixed penalty notices to vehicles blocking, or obstructing traffic on Grane Road on Monday, and extra patrols were in place on Tuesday afternoon to deal with any antisocial or criminal behaviour. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service were also in attendance at the quarry to divert people away from the area and give water safety messaging.

She said: “I know it’s hard to stop them swimming but somebody will die in that quarry. We get people asking where the Blue Lagoon is. We try and warn them but they think they’re invincible.” She said: “Nothing is more tempting than the beautiful water up at what is known as ‘the Blue Lagoon’ when the weather is warm.
