“I know there are young people who need to see a me speak out so that they can get one step closer to doing the same.”
When she was 18 months of age, Erivo tells me her mother said she hummed all the time. No words yet, but already in tune with who she was becoming. By the age of 11, she had already landed on the stage in the UK in the musical version of Bertolt Brecht’s. She’d go on to perform requiems at her Catholic School including the intense and beautiful Carmina Burana. A turning point came when, as a 15-year-old, she accompanied a friend to an audition for a youth production ofat the Young Vic theatre.
“I was never afraid of speaking or singing in front of people,” she says. “I’m vocal about people owning who they are fully and I’m vocal because fear robs us of truly exploring ourselves and truly learning and experiencing the fullness of our innate ability.” As we talk, the morning swelters by quickly. Erivo, in New York for the Tribeca Film Festival , tells me how it was she went from being a student studying music psychology at the University of East London to, among her many accolades, receiving Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Original song for the film
