Intuit, which owns TurboTax, admitted no wrongdoing in the case.

More than 4 million people should start looking for their cut of a settlement between TurboTax INTU and attorneys general over allegations the tax software giant tricked consumers into thinking it was doing their taxes for free.

Intuit, the owner of TurboTax, reached a $141 million settlement last year and now 4.4 million consumers across the country should look out for checks that could be as much as $85, according to New York State Attorney General Letitia James. “‘TurboTax’s predatory and deceptive marketing cheated millions of low-income Americans who were trying to fulfill their legal duties to file their taxes.’”

Intuit settled the case without admitting liability, and the company has said it’s been clear about when marketing its free tax-preparation services. The website explains that specifics include eligibility to use the Intuit IRS Free File Product for the 2016/2018 returns. The user had to begin their taxes on a “TurboTax Free Edition” product before being told they were ineligible for the product, and then using a paid product.

The IRS is working on a study determining whether it is possible for the tax agency to create its own free, online tax preparation service. The study is expected to be completed this month, but it’s already stoking controversy.
