As the government rushes to push through legislation that would further delay legalizing medical assistance in dying for those suffering solely from mental illness until 2027, it could all come down to the will of the Senate. On Feb. 1, Health Minister Mark Holland introduced legislation that would add a further three-year delay to the legalization of MAID where mental illness is the sole underlying cause.

Lankin moved into the role of government liaison just over a week ago on what she calls a “six-month secondment” to further implement some Liberal government reforms around making the chamber more non-partisan. She said her decision is based on concerns around readiness, as well as the position taken by provincial health ministers in their letter to Ottawa, and a number of mayors and Indigenous leaders she has consulted.
