Most Columbus economic development deals involve tax abatements, but a select few developers get paid city tax dollars as a grant or 'contribution.'

City of Columbus economic development incentives typically come in the form of abatements, allowing developers to reduce or eliminate altogether what they owe in taxes for years.

But the latest payment came last week when the City Council approved an emergency request for a $170,000 contribution to Trolley Barn LLC, the entity behind the $30 million redevelopment of theThe first tenant, The Railhouse, opened on the first floor of thebuilding last December. The Switch speakeasy soon followed along with 11 other businesses earlier this year.

"As the city prioritizes the development and restoration of the built environment of our neighborhoods for our residents, contribution agreements are one of the many tools that we use as a way to encourage development/redevelopment activity," Sheldon Goodrum, spokesman for the city Development Department, said in an email.

"Once, you know, you run heavy equipment over things," the pavement gets crushed into something like gravel, DeHays said. Some of the aprons to people's driveways were damaged, also, he said. Under Coleman's urging, the Democrat-controlled Columbus Board of Education in 2019 agreed to a 70%, 30-year property tax abatement for the Trolley Barn, in return for incentives for Columbus students, including a free designated market stall, a cooler, high-speed internet for East High School and mobile laptop stations at the market.
