A large section of northeast Pickering sits on the Carruthers Creek watershed.On December 23, the office of Mayor Kevin Ashe sent a letter to Housing Minister Steve Clark. It asked for Clark to issue a Ministerial Zoning Order , which would fast-track the construction of a new community in the area calledStop Sprawl Durham“The MZO has the ability to spur immediate action, by creating employment opportunities in construction and related fields,” wrote Ashe.
As well, he said the owners were interested in contributing a 50-acre parcel of land for free, in case Lakeridge Health decided to construct another hospital in the future. Northeast Pickering was previously in the running for the hospital network’s next site, although officials wound up“The vision of Veraine is that of a complete and healthy community, and lands dedicated to healthcare will serve to strengthen that vision,” said a city spokesperson.
The councillors argued there should be more discussion with representatives of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
