If Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had consulted his caucus and cabinet before unveiling the two-month GST holiday and $250 payments for approximately 18.7 million working Canadians, some Liberal MPs say they would have highlighted the “obvious” omission of seniors and individuals with disabilities from these cost-of-living measures.
Collins also said in an interview with The Toronto Star that he was threatened with unspecified consequences by party leadership if he voted against the government. He did not say who from the leadership threatened him. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh backed the government last week to pass the GST holiday measure in the House. However, he has made his support for the $250 checks conditional on the government extending the benefit to include non-working seniors and individuals with disabilities.
