Solomon: Brandon Miller should keep playing for Alabama, and the law rightfully agrees
Freshman forward Brandon Miller and Alabama handed the presently top-ranked Houston Cougars and Jarace Walker one of their two defeats this season, winning 71-65 on Dec. 10 at Fertitta Center.To say Brandon Miller did nothing wrong is a bit strong, considering the circumstances, but the idea that the Alabama freshman forward deserves the harshest punishment, or any at all, is misguided.
Headline after headline, all over the country, including at HoustonChronicle.com, blared some version of “Alabama hoops star delivered gun in shooting.” Sometime later, Miles began asking Miller to return to give him a ride somewhere. In the hour-plus before Miller made it back to his teammate, Miles exchanged words with someone.Shortly after Miller pulled up, Miles gave the gun to Michael Davis, who shot and killed Harris in a gunfight with a friend of hers. She was in the passenger seat of a jeep that was fired upon.
Often when sports and the real world collide, rational thinking suffers. Fandom and envy get in the way. That is difficult to reconcile when a young woman is dead. Comparatively, Miller is in no way a victim.
