Tony Makuch, the CEO of Discovery Mining , outlined plans for new development and major investment, while also calling for a long-term push to improve quality of life in Timmins.

Extra tables had to be brought in to accommodate a packed house at the McIntyre Ballroom in Schumacher this week for the Timmins Chamber’s State of Mining luncheon. Makuch offered a look ahead at what he sees for the Timmins mining camp, including the company’s Pamour project .

“A couple of really exciting developments,” Makuch said. Among the largest in Canada “ going to be able to demonstrate that it’s a world-class discovery and in terms of what’s at Pamour and one challenge to be one of the largest gold mines and most productive gold mines -- between Pamour and Dome -- in all of Canada.

” At the podium, Makuch said Discovery is looking at billions of dollars in spending over the next several years to expand production, processing capacity and hundreds of new jobs. But he also acknowledged that growth could create pressure for people already living in the community. During a question-and-answer session, a resident raised concerns about the relocation of Fairway Village.

Makuch said the company has been working with the City of Timmins on housing options, adding that some cases will have to be addressed individually. Part of larger conversation For Makuch, that is part of a larger conversation about what Timmins needs to support future growth. He spoke about investment in housing, recreation, education, health care and public safety, as well as the need to give young people a reason to stay in the community.

“I really think public safety in Timmins is important,” Makuch said.
