The premier spoke to UCP members on Saturday in a speech that kicked off a leadership review that’s to take place until May 11 through mail-in ballots
EDMONTON — In what could be the most important speech of his political career, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney on Saturday pitched a vote on his party leadership as a choice between unity or a path to divisiveness and a second NDP provincial government in 2023.
In his speech, which was also livestreamed online, Kenney said he’d respect the wishes of voters and asked that the party rally around him should the members vote in favour of him staying on. After years of frustration, voters brought in the NDP, said Kenney, which “handed government to left-wing ideologues who want to turn Alberta into some kind of socialist lab experiment.”
The sharp attacks on the NDP were the most notable part of his speech. The rest of the nearly 45-minute pitch was the premier reiterating things he’s said publicly before. He said there were no easy choices in the COVID-19 pandemic between public health, and freedom and liberty. “All I ask our Alberta conservatives to understand is that these difficult decisions were made in the best of faith, with the information in front of us, with only bad options,” said Kenney.
