A proposed soccer stadium at Kingston's Memorial Centre has ignited discussions about green space preservation, community use, and the potential impact on existing tenants.
Victory Grounds Ventures is proposing a 4,000 to 6,000-seat soccer stadium at Kingston’s Memorial Centre. The project aims to revitalize the area and create a new home for turf sports in the city. Lead investor Paul Barbeau stated that the land is already zoned for their proposal, and cited the success of previous events held at the Memorial Centre, such as Frontenac games. A public meeting was held by Williamsville District Coun. Vincent Cinanni to gather residents’ feedback.
While acknowledging the potential benefits, Cinanni emphasized the importance of evaluating the project’s impact on the community and existing users of the Memorial Centre grounds. Residents have expressed mixed reactions, with some concerned about the loss of green space and the potential displacement of current users, while others are optimistic about the project, provided existing uses are maintained. Barbeau addressed these concerns, assuring residents that he does not intend to displace the farmer’s market and plans to collaborate with them. The proposal will be discussed at Tuesday’s city council meeting, with councillors and Mayor Bryan Paterson voting on one of three options: moving forward with research, exploring an alternative location, or scrapping the plan entirely
