Harris: So Ontario premier Doug Ford doesn’t want to talk about it? via thehilltimes
When the Emergencies Act inquiry repeatedly asked both Premier Doug Ford, pictured, and his then-Attorney General Sylvia Jones to be interviewed, the answer was no. When they were asked to testify about matters they know more about than anyone else in the Ontario government, they refused. As a result, the inquiry has been forced to issue subpoenas to both Ford and Jones. Think about that, writes Michael Harris. The story link will be added automatically.
Given the huge public interest involved in how that could have happened, particularly in light of intelligence reports at the time suggesting that this shit-show was not going to be over in a weekend, you would think that Ontario’s Big Kahuna would contribute to the process of laying out the facts without having his arm twisted.
What message does it send when he effectively tells the people who elected him, he doesn’t have to tell them what really happened in their province? And there is this question: if the prime minister of the country can step up and testify at the Emergencies Act inquiry, without a subpoena, as he plans to do, why can’t the premier of Ontario?
This is getting to be a serious issue in politics, both for politicians themselves and their staffs. Consider the parade of American public figures in whose dubious footsteps Ford is following. Trump’s former chief-of-staff Mark Meadows also didn’t turn up last November when he was subpoenaed by Congress to testify before the Jan. 6 committee. Trump had advised Meadows and three others to follow that course. A court has now ordered Meadows to appear before the Grand Jury in Georgia.
Former Trump lawyer and New York mayor Rudy Giuliani refused to testify before the same Georgia Grand Jury looking into efforts to influence the result of the state’s vote after the election had taken place. Giuliani met twice in person with Georgia election officials, and also communicated by telephone. The former Trump ally, now barred from practising law in his home state, was finally ordered by a justice of the New York Supreme Court to obey the Georgia summons.
