A light snowfall is expected to hit most of Newfoundland over the next 48 hours, starting in the Northern Peninsula and spreading south. Driving conditions may be difficult at times. Meanwhile, rain and snow will continue in Labrador.
Some snow will fly across the Island over the next 48 hours. It will begin first on the Northern Peninsula overnight and then will spread south Thursday morning. Most areas west of the Avalon will see the snow arrive by Thursday evening, and the Avalon should see it Thursday night. The snow will end from north to south on Friday afternoon. While significant amounts aren’t expected, the snow will sometimes make some wintry driving.
Meanwhile, the coast of Labrador will see the rain and snow continue into Friday. Right along the coast, the snow will mix with rain, and that will keep amounts down. Inland and over higher terrain, amounts will be higher. The same will be true for Happy Valley-Goose Bay.Some folks were wild enough to do some surfing today… the location remains undisclosed!Daily snow depth records at YYR go back to 1955, but prior to 2025 there has never been a date in January with less than 2 cm of snow on the ground. The weather across the Island is fairly quiet today, minus a few flurries being picked up by radar over western areas. Temperatures are near or above freezing in the lower terrain, so travel conditions should be good for most areas. Meanwhile, areas of rain and snow persist in Labrador as the moisture influx from the North Atlantic continues. This pattern will not shift much in the coming days and the weather there will remain status quo into at least Friday
