My favourite definition of ethics is obedience to the unenforceable. Acceptable behaviour in the stark light of day is just good thinking.
The same applies to minor matters like hiring a friend to perform a service or forgetting to mention to the public that a foreign country is attempting to influence the outcome of our elections. These things are obviously wrong.
There is little doubt that we have sunk to new lows with the ethical behaviour expected in public service, most prominently in the disdain the Trudeau government has for transparency and ethics. In the history of Canada, there’s been no government that has lost a justice minister, finance minister, clerk of the Privy Council and chief of staff as the direct result of the questionable judgment of the prime minister.
Ethics in any organization begin with leadership and a strong moral compass. If the leader thinks ethical behaviour is optional, the organization will always do the easy thing instead of the right thing.
