When pure evil fills the front page, the saddest part is the predictability.
Our species is capable of heinous, unspeakable acts. We are capable of torture and rape. We can kill infants and kidnap grandmothers.We hone hate through centuries. We glorify war. We are, over the arch of history, no better than Shakespeare’s Richard, who despised peace and was determined to be a villain.
Their actions were heinous, cruel, and savage. Savage is a fitting description for the hordes in Gaza and around the world who cheered on the slaughter. Those who lined the streets of Gaza to torment terrorized captives — paraded through the crowd — with bloodlust and cruelty were not alone. But I am most chilled by the vacuous cheerleaders and their simplistic slogans and meaningless gestures. Dr. Martin Luther King noted: “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”
