The Trudeau government isn’t serious about China.
The rest of the world is having sober thoughts about the evolving relationship with the People’s Republic of China. It has become, to most nations, obvious that opening trade with the PRC has not bent that country towards Western notions of commerce and diplomacy.
But we have been willfully blind to the challenges. We seem happy to ignore the realities of trade with a country that does not respect our laws and takes advantage of our freedoms. Not to worry, the RCMP said there was no threat to public safety. That, apparently, was all Canadians needed to know. Foreign interference in elections is small potatoes in the grand scheme of relations with China. Kissinger points to the game-changing potential of AI. He noted, “we are at the very beginning of a capability where machines could impose global pestilence or other pandemics.”
