Don’t call them unlikely heroes.
The win allowed the Flames to keep pace with the Winnipeg Jets, who are two points ahead of them in the standings after beating the New Jersey Devils earlier in the day and occupy the Western Conference’s second wildcard position. But the way the Flames secured them was huge, too.
“Yeah, it’s good, it’s nice,” Stone said afterward. “A little up and down throughout the game but nice to finish with that one.” Goals from Andrew Mangiapane, Nikita Zadorov and Nick Ritchie gave the Flames the lead by the midway point of the second period. But if it felt like they’d grabbed the momentum, that feeling didn’t last. Vatrano and Scott Harrington responded and the Ducks reclaimed the lead.
