Ottawa Senators forward Josh Norris wears a yellow non-contact jersey during the first day of training camp on Sept. 21, 2023.Countering the culture war with education and empathy | SaltWire #TransRights #HalifaxProtestThat loud sigh of relief you heard around Ottawa on Thursday afternoon came from the Bell Sensplex.
Norris isn’t taking any contact to start camp because he suffered a minor ailment during a skate last week. He played just eight games last season and when Senators general manager Pierre Dorion delivered the news Wednesday that Norris wouldn’t take contact, there was no shortage of concern. But Norris was involved physically, participated in every drill, and even did some extra work afterwards.
Smith, who has made no secret of the fact the club missed Norris last season, was thrilled to see him taking part in all the drills. You have to think the non-contact jersey will come off early next week and Norris will become a full participant if all goes well. It was interesting to note that Smith didn’t break up the line of Tim Stutzle, Claude Giroux and captain Brady Tkachuk. They will start the exhibition games that way Sunday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, but then Tarasenko will get a chance to skate in Giroux’ spot.
“We talked about it during the summer. I’ve played the right side before and so has . There’s a lot of different situations in the game so it’s about reading off each other and just making it work.”Oshawa Generals owner Rocco Tullio is part of Michael Andlauer’s group in the purchase of the Senators that was completed Thursday night.
