Paul Schrage, the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra’s interim music director, will conduct the event at St. John Presbyterian Church.

“I’m thrilled we’re coming back to Berkeley,” he says. “Everyone enjoys the winery concerts, but to play closer to home, in a big concert hall, is very important to us.”“I grew up in jazz clubs. I thought I was going to be a jazz musician too, playing a lot of Oscar Peterson, Horace Silver and hard bop. But then my band director gave me some piano works to learn for a music competition, and one of them was Mozart’s ‘D Minor Fantasy.

This year, the festival orchestra will play “La Finta Giardiniera Overture;” “the Lucio Silla Overture;” “Symphony No. 38,” better known as the “Prague Symphony,” which Mozart composed when he was only 16; and the absolutely gorgeous “Sinfonia Concertante for Four Winds in E Flat,” featuring soloists Laura Griffiths on oboe, Mark Brandenburg on clarinet, William Klingelhoffer on horn and Deborah Kramer on bassoon.

It all takes place this weekend: 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. John Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Ave. in Berkeley; 7 p.m. Saturday at the Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma; and Sunday at Mountain Winery in Saratoga. Tickets in Berkeley are $50 for general admission; $20 for teachers, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, firefighters, military and veterans; and $19 for students. Tickets in Sonoma range from $70 to $85, and tickets in Saratoga range from $69.75 to $79.75.

And if I were you, I’d make sure to get there 45 minutes early to catch Schrage’s preconcert talk about the “Prague Symphony.” “It won’t be academic or historical,” he says. “It’ll be about listening to the form of the music, like watching a movie when the main character tells you about what’s going to happen. I’ll demonstrate on piano and talk for a half hour, then a 15-minute break, and the concert will start.”
