Overblown accolades will invariably devalue and diffuse the actions of the truly deserving military heroes within our veteran community.
But as well-meaning as people’s intentions might be, just how automatically interchangeable should the terms “veteran” and “hero” be in our public parlance? Are all former and serving infantry soldiers, boatswains, cooks, fighter pilots, intelligence officers and construction technicians “heroes” simply because of their military service?Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
Of course, true military heroes do not, necessarily, have to come out of war. Among many recorded peacetime acts of military heroism was, a military doctor who was among the passengers of Canadian Forces Hercules Flight 22 when it crashed in the High Arctic in October 1991. As extreme weather hampered rescue efforts, Capt. DeGroot continued to tend to the injured and the survivors, ensuring they did not succumb to the cold, until help arrived.
More recently, out of the war in Afghanistan are examples of incredible heroism, some bordering on the superhuman. One example is Pte.of the Royal Canadian Regiment who, on Oct. 14, 2006 singlehandedly fought off numerous Taliban fighters in a desperate attempt to protect his unit’s position.
