Paramedic Samuelle Simard and RCMP Cst. Angie Wouters made the 850 km ride for cancer research this year
By Samuelle, on the far left and Angie, second from left, with their team mates for Tour de North 2026 Two Northwest emergency response personnel participated in this year’s Tour de North, despite it not going through their hometowns this year.
Tour de North is an annual event in which police officers and emergency service personnel cycle for seven days across northern B.C. , raising money for childhood cancer research and support services at the Canadian Cancer Society. Donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society through Cops for Cancer fund pediatric cancer research and support programs such as Camp Goodtimes. Thirteen riders set out on the 850-kilometre journey Sept. 11, from Fort St. John.
They finished in Williams Lake on Sept. 17, after seven days on the road. Smithers’ Samuelle Simard, who is a paramedic, cycled last year and this year.
“Watching and having kids suffer through any sickness is the worst,” she said. “I love cycling and love that I can support families and kids going through difficult times. ” She said she enjoyed the good weather they experienced for most the journey and her best memory was the teamwork, riding her bike with friends and meeting all the kids at the schools.
“Some of the kids made some really fun posters which the support teams held up and cheered us on the bigger hills,” she added. Terrace’s RCMP Cst. Angie Wouters joined the ride because as a law enforcement officer, she has seen firsthand how important it is to show up for people during difficult times.
“Cancer is something that has touched my life, just as it has touched the lives of so many others. The courage of those around me surviving, coping, and grieving provided me with the motivation and dedication to actively do something to provide support for research, programs, and Camp Goodtimes,” she said. Both riders felt challenged with fundraising but Wouters said she faced it head it on with a heartfull of gratitude and perseverance.
