Fire at Sawpit Bay, 2 km west of Pancake Bay Provincial Park, called out before noon
Fire officials were reporting that two new wildland fires were confirmed in the Northeast Region by early evening on Sunday, with one of them just north of the Sault.Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services Northeast Fire Region said at the time of its Sunday update, there are 31 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region: two were not under control, one was being held, six were under control and 22 were being observed.
The notable fire in the northeast remains Kirkland Lake 5 , a large fire approximately 5 km north of Stull Lake, 5 km southeast of McKee Lake, and 80 km west of Latchford. "This fire is 889 hectares in size and is not under control at the time of this update," the AFFES said. "FireRanger crews and helicopters with bucketing capabilities continue to work on this fire."
The fire hazard varies between moderate to high across the Northeast Region, AFFES said. A few localized areas are seeing a low fire hazard, including Chapleau, Opeepeesway Lake, Welcome Lake and the Fraserdale Wetland Complex.
