The Nationals closed out their season series with their Beltway rivals 0-4, but the 5-1 loss included their first — and only — run against Baltimore in 2023.
BALTIMORE — There was a bit of statistical significance to Jake Alu’s hit in the top of the fifth inning Wednesday, a flared single to left that brought in Dominic Smith. Once Smith crossed home at Camden Yards, the Washington Nationals had their first run in 36 innings against the Baltimore Orioles, a streak that stretched back to last season.Then, just like that, it was over.
Rookie Grayson Rodriguez, preparing for big October starts, held Washington to one run in 5⅔ innings. Patrick Corbin, once a postseason starter himself — not to mention the winning pitcher in Game 7 of the World Series — was tagged with four earned runs in his final 4⅔ innings of the year. His season ERA of 5.20 was another reminder of how much he’s regressed since the title run. But again, Corbin, 34, pitched for six months without missing a turn, finishing the season with 32 starts.
“The numbers don’t indicate that he did well,” Manager Dave Martinez said. “But he’s got more wins [10] than a lot of other starting pitchers in the major leagues. I could give him the ball every five days. He works really hard, he works hard in between his starts. The guy is going to eat innings for you. This winter, he needs to come up with an identity for him and what he wants to do moving forward.
“It starts with pitching,” Smith said of the Orioles. “Their pitching did well against us all year. That’s probably the reason they’re leading their division right now. They made it tough on us.”What’s left for Washington? Three games with the Atlanta Braves, who clinched the NL East title on Sept. 14. After going 17-11 in August, the Nationals are 7-17 in September with three more chances to improve that record.
“At the end of the year, younger team, it’s probably the most games a lot of guys have played, we’re probably getting a little tired,” Smith said. “But it goes to show the type of energy, the competitiveness you need later in the year to compete and go into the playoffs and to win. That’s one thing we should take away from this series and playing the Braves, too.”: Before the loss, the Nationals announced that they agreed to terms on a 2024 contract with utility man Ildemaro Vargas.
