This proposed residential building on East Victoria Street was sent back to the planning advisory committee by Amherst town council for revision by the developer.Amherst town council gave a thumbs-down to a big proposed residential development and a thumbs-up to two large commercial developments during its regular meeting on Monday night.

Meanwhile, construction will begin on a 162-unit complex of three buildings adjacent to E.B. Chandler Junior High School this year. While single-family dwellings continue to account for the majority of developments in small- to medium-sized towns, large apartment buildings are gaining an increasing share. That town has seen development run the gamut from large apartment buildings like the four built at Miner’s Landing , town houses and individual homes .

“We recognize a shortage in the entire spectrum of housing from the deeply affordable right up to the higher end,” said Kogon of Amherst’s situation. In Kentville, the migration has seen the mean age of the population lowered — the town’s largest cohort is now in the 30 to 39 range. Some of the large new apartment buildings are being built in areas long occupied by single-family homes.Leslie Childs of the Amherst and Area Heritage Trust agreed that there is a housing crisis and new homes need to be created, but cautioned that towns needs to look ahead and behind as they make decisions on whether to allow development.
