But the Mustangs haven’t been winning games by hitting home runs this season.“We kind of bought into it back in August when they were working on our field installing the new turf,” said Kingwood coach Kelly Mead. “We really couldn’t do a lot, so we really just focused on bunting and getting faster. It’s something that we have been working on the last four years. This year it’s working for us even more.
Kingwood will aim to keep the streak going when the Mustangs face Clear Springs in a best-of-three Region III-6A quarterfinal series that begins at 7 p.m. Thursday. Game 2 will be at 7 p.m. Friday, and if Game 3 is necessary, it will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday. All games will be played at Barbers Hill. The Mustangs are in the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2019.
Bunting and stealing bases seem to be a long-lost art in today’s game of baseball where everyone wants to see home runs. The Mustangs have an 83.17 percentage on stolen bases this season. Mead has even signaled his Mustangs for double steals, sacrifice bunts and even squeeze bunts to bring runs in. “I don’t want to say that it’s a lost art, but everyone wants to hit bombs and all that stuff,” Mead said. “If you bunt, you’re going to put a lot of pressure on a lot of teams, especially if you can run the bases, too. It’s something we work on every day. Here we are in the third round, and it has been successful.”“I like doing it,” said Richardson on playing small ball.
