Looking for a place to pamper your own skin this winter? Head to one of these go-to spots for a truly mind-blowing facial in the GTA. StarTogether

Amanda Schuler’s childhood interests were a little different than most kids’. While other children gravitated toward trucks or dolls, Schuler delighted in learning about … foot reflexology. “An odd thing for a kid to be interested in,” she admits. “But I have always been into natural therapies and wellness.” Her love for holistic practices was partly inspired by her mom, a skin-care minimalist decades before “skinamalism” began trending on TikTok.

What does radical transparency mean when it comes to skin care? Ember publishes the percentage of ingredients in all of their skin care, a rarity in the industry. For example, in Ember’s 02 duo, the facial oil contains 50 per cent plum kernel oil and 50 per cent grapeseed oil; together they are so full of antioxidants that it is a natural UV inhibitor, Schuler says. “It’s not a game, and it’s not about shrouding ingredients in a vault, or adding filler to increase profit,” she adds.

An upcoming addition to her line: the Sculpt & Glow Bar, a hard moisturizer in the shape of a gua sha tool, launching in December. It sculpts the face and moisturizes the skin, while a little mica adds that no-make-up make-up look as well as some glow. It, too, will list all the ingredient percentages.

Toronto is home to several brands leading the charge for this kind of transparency in skin care, according to Schuler, who cites Everist, Wildcraft, and Guests on Earth as inspiring examples: “I think the industry as a whole is ripe for change. It brings me joy to know that I am contributing in some small way to positive change that might turn into something bigger and bigger.”

Head to one of Schuler’s go-to spots for a truly mind-blowing facial.“Hailing from Hong Kong and with over 30 years of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine experience, Fang’s loving, straightforward style and instant results are the reason I keep coming. Once, she put the needles on one side of my face first so I could compare both sides. The sculpted jawline she can create with facial acupuncture is unrivaled in any other treatment I’ve had.
