Technology intended to alert first responders to vehicle crashes is being triggered when skiers take a tumble
Comox Valley RCMP are asking skiers and snowboarders to keep tabs on their Apple Watch when they’re on the slopes.
It was later determined that emergency crews had been hailed by a 911 call from an Apple Watch, triggered automatically when a skier took a tumble. Dwight Yochim, senior manager for B.C. Search and Rescue, said the crash-detection system, which is meant to be used with motor vehicles, generated three false activations in the Golden area in December. All were thought to be vehicle crashes but instead involved skiers or snowmobilers.
The crash-detection feature has been linked to about 30 false activations this ski season in Jasper National Park’s Marmot Basin, and Kelowna RCMP report a number of similar instances.
