The City of Regina's Executive Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to send the plans to city council. With council approval, the skate park phase should be complete this fall.
The committee unanimously approved the proposal, which require REAL to come up with the remaining $800,000 needed for the renovation through partnerships and other funding sources.“This is not a concept of creating a brand new facility, it’s using an existing facility differently than we have in the past,” said REAL CEO“Current operations at the Canada Centre itself loses $110,000 a year.
The indoor skatepark, or “Skatebarn” would feature a mix of public and private investment, with REAL covering a two year lease of facility space for the Regina Skateboarding Coalition which would operate the facility and provide equipment like ramps and rails.The Volleybarn facility already in Canada Centre consists of two volleyball courts.
“That kind of investment where you can get hundreds of folks into a facility not just for physical health but also mental health is a really good thing,” she said.
