San Jose Sharks assistant GM: “He was close with all of these guys. Everybody had a really good relationship with him.”
SAN JOSE – Negativity surrounded Ryan Merkley prior to the 2018 NHL Draft as a run-in with his junior coach the year before and an overall perceived immaturity and questionable attitude led some teams to leave the skilled yet mercurial defenseman off their draft lists.
Merkley was one of several players at the Sharks’ weeklong development camp who had their lives impacted by Marchment, who died unexpectedly in Montreal on July 6, a day before the start of the NHL Draft. Marchment was 53. “I was still in North Bay when we talked a couple of times on the phone. He was a big part of before and after” joining the Sharks, Russell said. “So after I signed I talked to him a couple of times, and he was awesome to me.
