Debbie Mullin married her passions for Vietnamese cuisine, sustainability, and international development when she founded Copper Cow Coffee, a fair-trade, no-waste, pour over coffee product. She also has raised over $3M in VC funding. She shares her tips for successful pitching here.

Copper Cow Coffee is one of the few women-led food and beverage brands to have raised venture capital. Sustainably sourced, biodegradable, compostable, and all-natural, Copper Cow Coffee is a portable pour over Vietnamese coffee with zero gadgetry. Founder Debbie Wei Mullin started the company in 2016 out of her sister's garage after leaving her job at the World Bank in supply chain management.

Just like dating, it’s hard not to get weighed down by rejection. I would obsess over what I could have done differently. But checking off my first 50 no’s helped me feel like I was making progress even when I wasn’t having meetings with the right fund.. Show up knowing exactly what is in the VC’s portfolio that is similar to yours and how those companies are doing. When I was first researching VC funds, I saw two similar beverage companies who had had great success raising venture.

Debbie Mullin created Copper Cow Coffee to reflect her Vietnamese heritage and passion for sustainability.Mullin grew up in California eating only Vietnamese food at home. When, as an adult, she began to discover organic produce and single origin coffees, she wondered why there wasn't a version of Vietnamese coffee that fit these trends. She also was passionate about sustainability.

After earning degrees in economics from Berkeley and MIT, Mullin joined the World Bank, but quickly realized it was too bureaucratic of an organization for her. “I felt like a cog in a machine, and wished longingly for more authority and creativity in my work,” she says. Eventually, she became inspired by her sister and her husband, both of whom are serial entrepreneurs. She felt she’d always regret it if she didn’t try starting her own company.
