Meet PWHL coaches Troy Ryan, Kori Cheverie, Howie Draper, Courtney Kessel, Carla MacLeod and Charlie Burggraf as women\u0027s league launches.
The 41-year-old former national team player first made her mark overseas, as an assistant coach in Japan, and most recently head coach of Cechia, which finished with respectable bronze medals behind perennial finalists Canada and the United States.
She’s under contract to continue helping that country through the 2026 Olympics. A Calgary product, MacLeod was also coaching the University of Calgary’s team the past two years and before the national program, played for the University of Wisconsin Badgers and is in that school’s Hall of Fame.Article contentHe goes from Edmonton and a long career at the University of Alberta as a player and coach of the women’s team to the bright lights of Broadway.
He has seen both programs flourish and was previously an assistant at the University of Minnesota. The 66-year-old played at the University of North Dakota in the 1970s with a few future NHLers, such as Doug Smail and also skated in Germany.The Etobicoke, Ont.-born defenceman/forward played for and also coached Canada as a gold medallist within a seven-year span, one of three golds through her career.
The 34-year-old is associate head coach of the NCAA Boston University Terriers and is married to NHLer Phil Kessel’s brother, Blake. Their sister, Amanda, is a top American player.
