The crackdown on minerals used in military and high-tech industries was retaliation against recent U.S. restrictions on Chinese semiconductor exports

China is imposing export restrictions on the United States on certain critical minerals used in the military and high-tech industries as a trade war worsens between the two superpowers.

After rolling out the sanctions on the U.S., Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian in a briefing on Tuesday accused the U.S. of “malicious suppression of China’s technological progress,” according to the Associated Press. The U.S. also relies heavily on China for germanium used in fiber optics communication networks and infrared night vision systems. It imports 54 per cent of its metal needs from China, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. However, Canada also provides a significant amount of supply because Teck Resources Ltd. recovers germanium dioxide as a byproduct of zinc mining in Alaska at its Trail smelter in British Columbia.

“The U.S. has multiple subsidiaries all around the world, there are no end of sleazy Swiss-based trading firms who will swear on their mother’s grave that the product isn’t going to the U.S. as it’s going to the U.S.,” said Mr. Ecclestone.
